Earnings Record

Definition

Your Social Security earnings record is the official record maintained by the Social Security Administration of all wages and self-employment income you have reported over your working life.

More Detail

Your Social Security benefit is calculated using your 35 highest-earning years from your earnings record, after adjusting for inflation. If you worked fewer than 35 years, zeros are averaged in for the missing years, which lowers your benefit. You can review your earnings record at ssa.gov by creating a My Social Security account. Checking your record periodically helps you catch errors that could reduce your future benefit.
