What is Medicare 101?

Medicare is federal health insurance for people 65 and older and certain younger people with disabilities. It has four parts — A, B, C, and D — and each one covers different services. Most people turning 65 have a limited window to enroll without paying higher premiums for the rest of their lives.

Our free Medicare 101 seminars cover everything you need to know to make a confident decision before your deadline.

What We Cover at the Medicare 101 Seminar

Medicare Part A and Part B

Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and some home health care. Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment. Together they are called Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage vs. Original Medicare

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. They bundle Part A and Part B — and usually Part D — into a single plan. Choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage is one of the most important decisions you will make at 65.

Medicare Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D helps pay for prescription drugs. If you do not enroll when you are first eligible, you may pay a late enrollment penalty every month for as long as you have Part D coverage.

When to Enroll

Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after. Missing this window can result in permanent premium penalties. There are also Special Enrollment Periods if you have employer coverage.
