Medicare
Medicare Part A
Definition
Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. It covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health services.
More Detail
Most people do not pay a premium for Part A because they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. To qualify for premium-free Part A, you generally need at least 40 quarters (10 years) of Medicare-covered employment. Part A has a deductible per benefit period, not per year. In 2024, that deductible was $1,632 per benefit period.
